D.O. labeling regulations Catalonia
Wines that wish to be labeled with the Catalunya Designation of Origin must comply with the following requirements.
Products protected by the DO CATALUNYA may be wine, semi-sparkling wine, and liqueur wine, with white, rosé, or red variations, as appropriate. Depending on their production and/or aging process, they may use the following designations:
Crianza – In the case of red wine, it must have been aged for a total of two years, with a minimum of six months in oak barrels with a maximum capacity of 330 liters.
For white and rosé wines, the total aging period will be 18 months, of which at least 6 months will be in oak barrels of the same maximum capacity as above.
Reserva.- In the case of red wine, it must have undergone a total aging period of no less than three years, of which at least 12 months will be spent in oak vats with a maximum capacity of 330 liters and the remainder in bottles. For white and rosé wines, the total aging period will be no less than 2 years, of which at least 6 months will be spent in oak barrels of the same maximum capacity as above and the remainder in bottles.
Gran Reserva (Gran Reserva): In the case of red wine, it must have undergone a total aging period of no less than five years, of which at least 24 months will be spent in oak barrels with a maximum capacity of 330 liters and the remainder in bottles. For white and rosé wines, the total aging period will be no less than 4 years, of which at least 6 months will be spent in oak barrels of the same maximum capacity as above and the remainder in bottles.
Nouveau (Nouveau Wine): Wines designated as Nouveau may only be marketed with the harvest year indicated on the label. They must be bottled during the year of the harvest and/or from November 11th of the year in which the grapes were harvested.
Young: Wines designated as “young wine” may only be marketed with the harvest year indicated on the label. They must be bottled during the year of the campaign and/or from December 20th of the year in which the grapes were harvested.
Barrel fermented: Fermentation must take place in wooden containers with a maximum capacity of 600 liters.
Barrel: Information regarding the wine in question on the label must specify the period of time in months or years and the type of wooden container in which it has been aged, with a maximum capacity of 600 liters.
Oak: Information regarding the wine in question on the label must specify the period of time in months or years in which it has been aged in oak containers, with a maximum capacity of 600 liters.
